When Sybarite5 performs in Fairbanks this weekend, one of its two public shows will feature some special guests — teen musicians from Fairbanks.

Students from Michele Jeglum’s chamber orchestra at West Valley High School will perform one number with the internationally known group.

As if that isn’t inspiring enough for parents and family members of those musicians, Fairbanks Concert Association invites any adult ticketholder to bring along a teen, between ages 13 and 18, for free.

“It will be an opportunity for them to see their peers perform in a professional setting and for the chamber orchestra students to perform for their peers,” Fairbanks Concert Association Executive Director Anne Biberman said.

Sybarite5 is the first string quintet ever selected as winner of the Concert Artists Guild International Competition in its 60-year history. The Washington Post raved about them earlier this month, describing hard-driving rhythms, “blissed-out faces of the mostly young audience” and cheering after intermission.

The concert takes place at 8 p.m. Saturday at Hering Auditorium.

Sybarite5 will also perform at the Blue Loon on Friday, but that performance is already sold out to FCA season ticket-holders.

Other students will get a chance to hear the group first-hand at a school performance Friday morning.
